Project Description

Substation #2 is located at Washington Street (west side), the HBLR tracks (south side), and Greene Street (east side), and it supplies electrical power to the PATH rail system. The substation regulates the power source for PATH trains, allowing more trains to run more reliably. The replacement of this substation was authorized by PANYNJ Board in December 2018 to upgrade important rail infrastructure. The current substation’s electrical and mechanical equipment is nearing the end of its useful life. The new substation will feature modernized functions and house updated electrical and mechanical equipment.

The work under this contract calls for the installation of Gas-insulated Switchgear, Heavy-Duty Traction Power Transformers, Medium Voltage and Traction Power Cables, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system, Synchronous Optical Network equipment and Security and Access controls; Construction of a Bulkhead for tunnel emergency evacuation shaft and an underground utility connection to existing PATH tunnels and subsurface utilities; furnishing, installing and commissioning electrical and mechanical equipment, compressor plant for pneumatic air system and fire protection systems; furnishing and installing Stand-By Generators; switch-over from the existing Substation No. 2; site work, including grading, landscaping, construction of access roadways, curbs and walkways, furnishing and installing perimeter fencing and drainage, maintenance and protection of vehicular and pedestrian traffic and related work.

Five Star Electric’s scope of work included furnishing and installation of  Medium Voltage Gas Insulated Switchgear, Low Voltage Switchgear and Controls, DC Traction power Switchgear, Large Medium Voltage feeders spliced to existing feeders in PATH Tunnels, DC traction Power feeders spliced to existing feeders in PATH Tunnels, SCADA System equipment and integration into existing system, Fire Alarm System, Security System, Roof-Mounted Stand-By Generators, Battery Systems, as well as Lighting and Power.
